So Sydney-siders complain about traffic congestion, well, Duh, so do most people in over-populated and traffic-averse cities in the Western World, but the inhabitants of Darjeeling appear to have found an appropriate compromise.
My dear friend, Hans Tholstrup, with whom I competed in the 1977 Singapore Airlines London-to-Sydney Car Rally has just emailed this photo from his taxi in Darjeeling.
His caption reads – “This is a two-way street for traffic, but just one-way when the train passes through.”
So you see, there’s always a solution if you look hard enough.
Does altitude make a difference to solutions? Darjeeling is at 2225m (7300ft). Does that mean thinner air leads to clearer thinking? It may, but could you convince your average (very average) Australian politician? Maybe not.
